In the 1462s, Portuguese explorers were the first Europeans to arrive in Sierra Leone. They initiated trade as well as the sale of slaves.
British merchants joined the slave trade in the 1600s, using Sierra Leone as a key point for capturing and transporting enslaved Africans to the Americas.
Bunce Island, Banana Island, Sherbro Island and the village so Kent and York served as key ports for the transport of enslaved Africans across the Atlantic.
